Changing multiple file permissions on Windows 7

Recently I moved a hard drive from an older PC to a newer one.  I attempted to delete the Windows and Program Files directories and was given this unfriendly message:

Folder Access Denied

Access Denied

Clicking continue fails with a message abut requiring permission from TrustedInstaller.

Trusted Installer

No need to Try Again, it won’t work.

To fix this dilemma one needs to edit the properties of the folder twice.  Once to obtain ownership and secondarily to set full control permissions.

Start with right clicking on the folder from explorer and selecting properties:

and on the security tab click Advanced near the bottom.

Switch to the Owner tab and click Edit…

Highlight your user account in the Change owner to: section and click on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects as shown below:

Click Apply and wait for the Windows Security dialog changing ownership of to finish.  Once finished you will be presented with this dialog:image_12

Click OK and OK and OK and OK (4 times) to close out of the properties windows.

Next, right click on the folder again; select properties again; go to the security tab again and click Advanced again (like in the instructions above).

From the Permissions tab (shown below), click on Change Permissions…

Next is displayed the Advanced Security Settings dialog:

Click on Add… and fill out the Enter the object name to selected:

In the next dialog (Permission Entry) check Full control “Allow” as shown below.  And you don’t want to check “Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only”.

After returning to the prior dialog and before clicking on Apply, make sure “Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object” is checked as indicated below:

The last step is to click Apply and agree to the following warning:

With the changes applied, you can click OK, OK, OK to close out of the open dialogs.

And now the folder can now be deleted.

Shrew Soft VPN Client for Windows 8

The Shrew Soft VPN Client works great on Windows 8 as a replacement for the Cisco VPN client.  The only oddity after installing the software is that the client program is not registered in the start menu (only the documentation shows up when searching for VPN).  However, navigating to the folder C:\Program Files\ShrewSoft\VPN Client and running ipseca.exe allowed the Cisco .pcf file to be imported and the VPN tunnel established flawlessly.  Kudos to Shrew Soft.

VMWare Workstation after Windows 8 upgrade–Need to run as Administrator

After installing Windows 8 on my main PC I went to launch VMWare Workstation (version 7.1.5 build-491717) and was greeted with this nice message:

image_2

“Not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine with its configured settings.
To fix this problem, increase the amount of physical memory for all virtual machines to 2311 MB or adjust the additional memory settings to allow more virtual machine memory to be swapped.
If you were able to power on this virtual machine on this host computer in the past, try rebooting the host computer. Rebooting may allow you to use slightly more host memory to run virtual machines.”

There may be other solutions but running VMWare Workstation as Administrator solved the problem.  All my VMs now run successfully on Windows 8 (when Hyper-V is turned off).

I hope this helps someone else.

Internet Explorer (IE) Market Share Decline

According to StatCounter, Internet Explorer’s market share has been declining sharply over the past four years.  One core reason is that newer versions of IE require the latest versions of the Windows operating system.  Recently we developed an entire web reporting framework for IE9 only to discover during rollout that our client’s desktops were running Windows XP (mea culpa).  This forced a quick scramble to install FireFox.  We now test our product using FireFox and recommend customers use the FireFox browser for an optimal experience.

Microsoft IE ads on television are not going to correct this.
